Canoeing, rock climbing, challenge course part of IU Outdoor Day at Bradford Woods

March 30, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The first "IU Outdoor Day" is planned for April 7 to acquaint Indiana University students, faculty and staff with the variety of outdoor recreation activities available at Bradford Woods Outdoor Center near Martinsville.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the facility operated by the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Professional instruction will be available in such activities as canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking and a high ropes challenge course. A fee of $5 per person includes all instruction and lunch.

Doug Knapp, coordinator of outdoor recreation and resource management for HPER, said officials worked with the IU Student Adventure Program and HPER's Department of Recreation and Park Administration in arranging the event.

"With the popularity of such programs as 'Survivor,' we think the recreation programs available at Bradford Woods would interest the campus community," Knapp said. "This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to have an enjoyable and educational day of outdoor recreation where they can have fun getting dirty."

Workshop topics include canoeing, water quality/eagle watch, wild edibles/wild flowers, new games, high ropes, hiking, challenge course, eco-adventures, underwater science, sea kayaking, orienteering and job prospects in outdoor recreation.

Bradford Woods is a 2,400-acre outdoor and leadership center that has provided recreational, educational and leadership development opportunities to youth and adults for more than 50 years. It is located in the forested Indiana hills about 40 minutes from the Bloomington campus.
