Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity expelled from campus

Oct. 4, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Richard McKaig, vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, today (Oct. 4) announced that he has expelled the Delta Xi chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity from the Bloomington campus.

This action was unanimously recommended to McKaig by the university's Fraternity/Sorority Judicial Board following a judicial conference held earlier this week. The board, composed of nine undergraduate members of various Greek letter chapters on campus, found Pi Kappa Alpha responsible for violations of the university's Disciplinary Procedures for Student Organizations.

In addition, the board found Pi Kappa Alpha responsible for failing to comply with a disciplinary sanction from February 1999, which stated that "failure to comply with any or all of this sanction will result in the reinstatement of the expulsion recommendation, and the chapter will be closed." The February 1999 action was taken as a result of an incident at the chapter house where campus alcohol policies also were violated.

"I commend the board for its recommendation and the strong stance it has taken regarding this incident," McKaig said. "This decision demonstrates that administrators and students in the Greek community are equally concerned about actions that endanger our campus community and violate the standards and values we have collectively chosen for ourselves."

Expulsion from the campus means that Pi Kappa Alpha is no longer a recognized member of the IU Greek system and, effective immediately, may no longer function as a student organization on the Bloomington campus. It will be unable to participate in intramural sports, social events, and campus activities such as Homecoming, IU Dance Marathon, IU Sing and Little 500. The expulsion is effective for a period of not less than two years.

The university communicated its decision to the Pi Kappa Alpha national headquarters earlier today. The national organization has indicated that it accepts this sanction and will cooperate with the university in its enforcement. McKaig said he has been pleased with the level of cooperation between the university and the national organization throughout the process.

This disciplinary action resulted from the university's investigation of an incident that occurred at the chapter house (1012 E. Third St.) on Sept. 16. It was determined that alcoholic beverages were served to students below the legal drinking age following a chapter event and that no state licenses or campus approvals were either requested or obtained before the event. Following the event, an associate member of the chapter who had attended the function required medical attention as a result of his drinking.
