IU African American Arts Institute presents "A Potpourri of Arts" on Oct. 31
Oct. 22, 1999
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As part of Arts Week '99, the IU African American Arts Institute (AAAI) will present "A Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition" at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre in Bloomington on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m.
It will feature performances by the African American Choral Ensemble (ACE), the African American Dance Company and the IU Soul Revue. Tickets are $5 and admission is free to children under 12. Advance tickets can be purchased at Borders Books and Music and will also be available at the door.
ACE, under the direction of James E. Mumford, celebrates their 25th anniversary this year. They will perform the traditional spiritual, "Lord I Want to Be a Christian" arranged by Moses Hogan and "Striving After God" by Undine Smith Moore. Contemporary gospel groups made up of ACE members -- Sojourner, God's Progress and Soul-ACE -- will also perform.
The African American Dance Company, under the direction of Iris Rosa, will perform two pieces. "Spiritual Suite," expresses the black experience through spirituality and transforms the stage into the inside of a church. The second piece, "Ode to Jim," is dedicated to Jim Canady, a former AAAI employee.
The IU Soul Revue, under the new direction of Tyron Cooper, will perform a show centered on the theme of love. Tunes such as "September" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Don't ask my Neighbor" by the Emotions and "Love and Happiness" by Al Green will be featured. The chosen tunes coincide with Cooper's plans to concentrate on music that combines the styles of the 70s and 90s, to "bridge the generation gap in music."
