Indiana Memorial Union Board to bring Colin Powell to campus
Sept. 5, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Reaffirming its longstanding commitment to the students, faculty and staff of Indiana University, the Indiana Memorial Union Board will present a lecture by retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell, former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Powell will speak on "Challenges of a Changing World" on Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. at the IU Auditorium. Tickets are free and will be available first to IU students, faculty and staff.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Powell earned a reputation for wisdom, calm and leadership most visibly demonstrated during crises at the highest levels of government.
"For the past several years, the Union Board Lectures Committee has consistently held Colin Powell as its top choice for a public lecture," said Union Board President Mike Gosman. "The fact that this will be a reality just days before the presidential election is truly exciting."
According to Vaughn Allen, Union Board public relations director, "It's a testament to the hard work of the Union Board that we were able to pull this event together. As a student organization, we are proud to make this available to the IU community." The event is co-sponsored by the IU Foundation.
Powell grew up in the Harlem and South Bronx sections of New York City. He began his military career in 1958 as an infantry lieutenant, later serving in the Vietnam War. In 1989, he was named a four-star general and nominated chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff by then-President George Bush. As chairman, Powell played an integral role in the planning of U.S. military efforts worldwide, including the Desert Storm and Desert Shield operations that forced Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. He retired from the military in 1993.
Since 1997, he has served as chairman of America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth, a national campaign that strives to build and strengthen the character of our nation's young people.
The Indiana Memorial Union Board has brought thousands of programs to the IU community since its inception in 1909. Union Board is comprised of 16 student and four non-student directors responsible for the campus programming that has educated and entertained the IU community through the years.
