Has served as a political analyst for state and local television. His political polls, conducted both as the IUPUI Poll and for major media outlets, are the most respected polls in Indiana. Recent polls have focused on the role of issues in the voting behavior of Hoosiers. Current research examines interpersonal trust and political support, the role of polls in politics, and issue concerns of voters and their reaction to paid advertising. Classes he is teaching this semester include "Election 2000" and "Elections and Voting Behavior." Research interests are the links between citizens and their governments, electoral behavior, and relationships of elections to policy change in Congress and the states. Participated in a National Science Foundation study on the measurement and analysis of party and ideology among state electorates. Co-author of the book "Statehouse Democracy: Public Opinion and Policy in the American States" (Cambridge University Press, 1994) and co-editor of the book "Congress and Policy Change" (Agathon Press, 1983).
