IU men's soccer NCAA quarterfinal game to be audiocast over World Wide Web Sunday
Nov. 30, 1999
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University is offering soccer fans worldwide an opportunity to follow the Hoosiers' defending NCAA champion men's soccer team in its quest for a fifth national title, from the comfort of their own homes.
IU will audiostream live over the World Wide Web the entire quarterfinals contest on Sunday (Dec. 5) against the Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions. The game and broadcast will begin at 2 p.m. EST (19:00 Universal Time). Those wishing to listen to the match should log on to http://broadcast.iu.edu. RealPlayer G2 will be needed to listen to the audiocast. For those who can't log on to hear the action as it unfolds, the match will be archived for one month for rebroadcast on the Web.
IU has been a national leader in new uses of emerging communications technologies such as the Internet. It was the first university to broadcast live on the World Wide Web a major collegiate soccer tournament, the adidas/IU Credit Union Soccer Classic on Sept. 3-5, and also presented soccer matches with Pennsylvania State University and Ohio State University.
The IU and Penn State men's soccer teams have faced off twice already this season. On Oct. 1, IU beat Penn State 4-2, and on Nov. 14, IU defeated Penn State 2-1 in double overtime in the championship game of the Big Ten tournament.
The IU soccer team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals on Nov. 28 with a 2-0 second round victory over the University of Washington Huskies.
Coached by Jerry Yeagley, now in his 27th year at IU, the team won its fourth NCAA soccer championship in December 1998 with a 3-1 victory over Stanford.
