IU to voluntarily conduct further studies at Range Road coal ash site

May 8, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University announced today that it will voluntarily conduct further studies of the Range Road coal ash site and take appropriate action as indicated in the study.

J T. Forbes, IU assistant vice president for public affairs and government relations, said, "We want to assure the Bloomington community and any other interested citizens that we are committed to protecting human health and the environment for present and future generations."

Forbes noted that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has told IU that the state conducted an assessment of the site between 1989 and 1993 and determined that no further action is warranted. He said the university view is consistent with that of the state, and that this voluntary action is an extra step being taken by IU to resolve concerns which have been raised from time to time.

IU has declined a proposal from a local citizens group who wanted to supervise and control a Range Road site investigation. University representatives recently met with the group to better understand their concerns and views. After careful consideration, the university determined that its approach is the appropriate way to resolve the matter.

"We share their concern for the environment," Forbes said. "We hope this action will put the matter to rest."
