IU CENTER OFFERS HELP TO COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Learning to learn is the subject of a one-day Indiana University workshop for college-bound high school students, from sophomores through recent graduates. "Strategies for Learning and Living in College" is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 12, on the Bloomington campus.
The Student Academic Center's annual workshop is designed specifically to introduce high schoolers to a university environment while teaching them effective study skills for achieving academic success in high school as well as college. The skills include time management, taking notes from texts and lectures, reading college-level textbooks with understanding and taking multiple choice and essay exams. The workshop sessions are led by experienced instructors from the center.
Experts say the transition from high school to college is difficult for both students and parents, so special sessions will be available at no extra cost to parents of participants. These sessions will cover such topics as what parents need to know about sending children to college, and the role of parents in determining the academic success of their children. Both parents and students may attend a session on exploring major and career issues and how such decisions contribute to college success.
Additional opportunities to tour the IUB campus, learn how to use a large university library to enhance one's learning or how to use the World Wide Web as a career and education information source, will be available in the late afternoon for all participants.
The $65 registration fee includes all instruction. Participants will be responsible for the cost of their own lunch, but supervision, if needed, will be provided. A registration form or more information can be obtained by writing to the Student Academic Center, 316 N. Jordan, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405, or calling 812-855-7313.
