IU appoints co-directors of Information Technology Security Office

Sept. 8, 1999

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Vice President Michael McRobbie has announced the appointment of Tom Davis and Scott Hutton as university information technology security officers and co-directors of the Information Technology Security Office. Davis and Hutton are jointly responsible for technical security programs and resources, for helping university users defend against computer viruses and other security threats, and for technical security consultation, reviews and incident response.

In their association with IU, Davis and Hutton have been instrumental in the development of a safe computing environment. According to Information Technology Policy Officer Mark Bruhn, "Over the years, these two individuals have been aggressive in their pursuit and application of broad technical knowledge, and have individually helped increase the overall level of security university-wide. Their combination of technical expertise and security savvy is hard to find."

Davis has been with IU since 1988. He played an important role in the implementation of "Safeword" card devices, which extended the security of university enterprise data. Most notable in this area was his pioneering work in developing the means to use these cards in desktop applications.

In 1996, Davis became manager of the Security/Accounts Administration unit, which is responsible for security of IU information systems, including student records, finance, payroll and library. Since then, these administrative systems have been praised for their high level of security. Davis' strengths are in local area networks and desktop computing, client/server and database security, institutional data and systems, and viruses.

Hutton joined IU in 1991. As a member of the UITS Support Center, he played a key role in developing the UITS Knowledge Base and the system that tracks the solution of user problems. He joined the Messaging team in 1994, where he managed central e-mail services, Usenet, and Kerberos systems, and participated in the design and implementation of IU's account generation system.

In 1997, Hutton was appointed by Vice President McRobbie to what was then called the University Computing Security Office, where he implemented a comprehensive Web-based security information resource and designed an automated Web-based security scanning system. His strengths are in IP and local-area networking, Unix security, development and systems management, cryptography, electronic mail, and Web applications and servers.

IU is one of the oldest state universities in the Midwest and one of the largest universities in the United States, with more than 92,000 students, faculty and staff on eight campuses. IU also was selected to host the network operations center for Abilene, an Internet2 backbone network for research and education.
