American Cancer Society national leader to speak at educational series at IU on Thursday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- John Seffrin, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society and a former Indiana University professor and administrator, will present a lecture on the Bloomington campus on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m.

Seffrin will discuss "The Present and Future State of Cancer" in Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union. His presentation will be open to the public free of charge.

The talk is the last in a series of lectures preceding the "Hoosiers Outrun Cancer" event, a five- kilometer walk and run on Saturday (Oct. 20) starting at 10:30 a.m. at Assembly Hall on the Bloomington campus.

Seffrin was chairman of the Department of Applied Health Science and professor of health education in the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) for 13 years before leaving in 1992 to head the American Cancer Society.

He is a national and international leader in health education, disease prevention and public health. Seffrin has been recognized by two Indiana governors for outstanding public service, and he is a member of the National Cancer Policy Board. He has been designated a National Scholar, the highest honor possible from the American Association for Health Education. Seffrin was recently named president-elect of the International Union Against Cancer.
