IU organization to co-host conference on service learning and volunteerism

Feb. 12, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Conference on Service Learning and Volunteerism will take place March 1-2 at the Adam's Mark Airport Hotel in Indianapolis. The Civic Literacy Project at Indiana University and the Indiana Department of Education are hosting the conference.

The conference will provide an exciting opportunity for those building communities through service and service-learning, said Will Morgan, Executive Director of the Civic Literacy Project.

"It will be a time to share promising practices with each other as well as improve and increase the skills necessary for this demanding work. The conference brings together K-12 students engaged in service-learning, K-12 educators, and community volunteer organizations to share their experiences," Morgan said.

In addition to structured skill-building workshops, informal gatherings and resource sessions, the conference will feature several nationally recognized speakers. Speaking at the conference's plenary session will be James Kielsmeier, president and chief executive officer of the National Youth Leadership Council; Louis M. Nanni, executive assistant to the president of the University of Notre Dame; Joseph Smith, executive director of the Indiana Commission on Community Service and Volunteerism; and Daniel Tanoos, superintendent of schools for Vigo County in Indiana.
