MARK SOTHMANN NAMED DEAN
OF IU SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

BLOOMINGTON -- Mark Sothmann has been named by the Trustees of Indiana University as associate dean of the School of Medicine and dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences.

Sothmann had served as acting dean of the school since June 1996, and was recommended as dean by Robert W. Holden, dean of the IU School of Medicine. He succeeds John R. Snyder.

In making his recommendation, Holden said, "I believe that Dr. Sothmann's ability to focus on current issues and long-range planning in the rapidly changing health-care field makes him an excellent choice for dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences."

"The School of Allied Health Sciences' educational, research and service programs have evolved considerably over the past decade, due in large measure to the efforts of its faculty and previous administrations," Sothmann said. "Our principal future challenge is to position the school to be responsive to an unprecedented change in the structure, funding and delivery of health-care services in Indiana and nationally."

Sothmann joined the IU School of Allied Health Sciences in 1995 as associate dean for research and graduate studies.

He received his doctorate in exercise science in 1982 from Purdue University, and then spent 13 years on the faculty of the School of Allied Health Professions at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also held clinical faculty appointments with the University of Wisconsin Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The majority of Sothmann's teaching, research and service activity has focused on exercise intervention and the implications for rehabilitation, health and work performance.

He is a recipient of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Foundation Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors, is associate editor of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Physical Activity and Aging and the Journal of Allied Health.

A science adviser to NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, among other federal agencies, Sothmann is listed in American Men and Women in Science. He has been an expert witness and has lectured nationally on age discrimination and work performance.

He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the American Physiological Society.

The IU School of Allied Health Sciences includes the departments of cytotechnology, health information administration, health sciences education, histotechnology, medical technology, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, paramedic science, physical therapy, radiation therapy, radiologic sciences, and respiratory therapy. The school offers academic programs on five of the eight campuses in the IU system. Degrees range from associate of science to graduate education.
