RESULTS OF 1998 TEEN DRUG SURVEY
INDICATES DECLINE IN MARIJUANA USE

Editors and News Directors: The results of Indiana University's Indiana Prevention Resource Center's 1998 survey of Indiana teens about alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug use are now available and they indicate a continuation of the decline first noted last year.

William J. Bailey, IPRC director, said the 1998 survey shows slight increases in marijuana use by young people in some grade levels and decreases among those in others. But the changes are not statistically significant, he said. He notes that is a good sign that marijuana use continues to level off this year, thus continuing a turnaround that began in 1997 and after its use had increased at an alarming rate between 1992-1996. "It's also discouraging that we're not seeing progress in the other direction," Bailey observes.

The eighth annual survey of teen drug use was conducted in 137 schools in 41 communities around Indiana. An executive summary of the findings accompanies this alert and full details of the survey are available on the Web at: http://www.drugs.indiana.edu/drug_stats/youth98.html
