Major street through IU Bloomington campus to be closed for summer construction work
April 18, 2001
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A major portion of 10th Street through the Indiana University campus will be closed this summer for utility construction work.
IU and City of Bloomington Utilities officials have announced that 10th Street will be closed from Woodlawn Avenue to Jordan Avenue, starting after graduation on May 8 and lasting until approximately Aug. 10.
Bloomington Utilities Assistant Engineer Doug Jones said the project involves increasing the size of the sewer lines and water lines, plus increasing capacity of the storm drain system to reduce flooding in heavy rains. There will be limited pedestrian traffic along 10th and crossing 10th during the construction period.
A detour using Law Lane and 13th Street between Jordan and Indiana avenues will be posted to aid traffic flow.
In addition, a sewer line improvement project along 10th Street at the Crosstown Shopping Center will restrict traffic to one lane between the shopping center and Union Street for three to four weeks during the summer. Officials emphasized that all businesses in the Crosstown Shopping Center will be accessible to pedestrians and vehicles, although access may be limited at times. A detour will be posted through the construction area.
A third summer project in the same area will involve closure of Fee Lane from 10th Street to the entrance of the new Fee Lane parking garage because of construction work at the Kelley School of Business. There will be both vehicle and pedestrian restrictions in this area during the construction.
IU officials will post information about the construction on the Parking Operations Web site at http://www.parking.indiana.edu. In addition, a flier on the construction is being developed to inform summer visitors and guests to IU and Bloomington about the construction project and its effect on traffic patterns in the construction zone.
"These projects are necessary to replace aging sanitary and storm sewer lines and increase capacity. Though we know it will be inconvenient, we are pleased that the scheduling is being handled during the summer to minimize the disruption during the normal school year," said Kirk White, IU special assistant for external affairs. "We encourage motorists to begin making alternate plans and to allow extra travel time during the construction period."
