Tenth Street through IU campus to reopen soon; utility work to resume next summer

Aug. 13, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The section of 10th Street through the Indiana University campus that has been closed all summer for utility construction work is scheduled to reopen on Monday (Aug. 20), but it will be closed again next summer so crews can complete the job.

Bloomington Utilities Assistant Engineer Doug Jones said work will conclude in the next few days on the sewer lines, water lines and storm drain system so that the roadway will be open for regular traffic the week before the IU fall semester begins on Aug. 27.

"We hope to have the road reopened by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug.17, but feel it is safer to say the reopening will be on Monday, Aug. 20," Jones said.

The city official said "unexpected delays" and related problems precluded finishing the job during the summer. "We wanted to complete this work during the summer, but it just didn't turn out to be possible," he said.

Kirk White, IU special assistant for external affairs, said he was disappointed the project could not be completed, but he was pleased the remaining work will take place next summer instead of continuing into the upcoming school year. "As much as we hate to see 10th Street closed for two consecutive summers, we prefer that alternative to working on the project during the school year," White said.

Jones said crews were able to get most of the water and sewer line work completed, but almost all of the storm drain project will be done next summer. He added that a sewer line improvement project at Crosstown Shopping Center was completed, so that area will not be adversely affected next summer.

In a related project, Fee Lane north of 10th Street will be reopened to vehicles and pedestrians on Wednesday, Aug. 22. It has been closed all summer for work at IU's Kelley School of Business.
