BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the creation of Title VI, prominent educators, government officials and other dignitaries will convene at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., April 16-17, for a conference titled "International Education in American Colleges and Universities: Prospect and Retrospect."

Indiana University, with one of the highest concentrations of area studies centers in the country, was awarded funds from the U.S. Department of Education to organize the event.

Among the participants scheduled to make presentations are former Vice President and current Ambassador to Japan Walter F. Mondale; James Collins, U.S. ambassador to Russia; David Longanecker, U.S. assistant secretary for post-secondary education; U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.); Lawrence Eagleburger, former U.S. secretary of state; and Samuel Huntington, Harvard University.

After 40 years of helping students learn more about the world, Title VI of the Higher Education Act still plays a vital role in helping the United States maintain its position as a major world leader. Title VI grants are competitively awarded to universities and colleges to build centers of expertise on specific world regions and to provide scholarships to enable students to study the languages of those regions.
