Alumni voters elect Sue Hays Talbot as IU trustee

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sue Hays Talbot of Bloomington was elected today (June 30) by Indiana University alumni to a three-year term as an IU trustee. She garnered 6,429 of the 34,502 votes cast in a well-contested race.

A total of 159 ballots were voided. All candidates earned degrees from IU, and every degree-holder from the university had the opportunity to vote in the elections.
Talbot, who earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in education from IU, is past president of the School of Education Alumni Association and the IU Alumni Association, and founding director of Hoosiers for Higher Education, IU's advocacy organization. She has been Indiana Teacher of the Year and runner-up for a similar award nationally. She also has been special assistant for education to the governor and is a two-time recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash award.
IU has nine trustees, with three elected by the alumni. The other two alumni trustees are Cora Smith Breckenridge of Elkhart, Ind., who was first elected in 1997 and whose present term ends in 2003; and James Morris of Indianapolis, who was first elected in 1996 and whose present term ends in 2002.
The remaining trustees are appointed by the governor.
The trustees' next meeting will be Aug. 16-17 at the University Place Conference Center on the IUPUI campus.
