IU Trustees set tuition, approve budget for 2000-01

May 5, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- At their meeting today (May 5), the Trustees of Indiana University approved tuition rates for the 2000-01 academic year that will increase undergraduate tuition for Indiana students by 4 percent on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses and by 3.5 percent on the regional campuses.

The typical full-time in-state undergraduate student at IU Bloomington will pay an additional $75. A similar student at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis will pay an additional $69.

Tuition increases approved for in-state students at the regional campuses -- IU East (Richmond), IU Kokomo, IU Northwest (Gary), IU South Bend, and IU Southeast (New Albany) -- represent an average increase of $51. Tuition and fees for Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) are set by Purdue University.

These increases are not expected to change IU Bloomington's rank among the public Big Ten universities, which places its tuition rate solidly in the middle.

Trustees also set undergraduate tuition rates for out-of-state students, which will increase by 4 percent, as well as tuition for those enrolled in IU's graduate and professional programs.

Along with setting tuition, the Trustees approved a $1.91 billion overall operating budget for Indiana University. The budget is funded from a variety of sources, including state funding; tuition and fees; gifts; investment income; research grants; and income from self-supporting auxiliary enterprises such as the residence halls, bookstores, athletics and other service departments.

"This is the third year in a row that the Trustees have passed a budget with reasonable tuition increases," commented IU President Myles Brand. "This budget reflects our efforts to balance our commitment to educational access for all qualified students while also sustaining our excellence."
