IU's Kelley School and University of Evansville team up to offer accounting degree
Feb. 9, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Beginning this fall, students at the University of Evansville will have the opportunity to earn a master's degree in professional accountancy through Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.
"IU and UE recently signed the agreement to offer this opportunity to UE students following their degree program at UE," said David Reeder, dean of the UE School of Business Administration. "Indiana University is holding 12 seats in the one-year program specifically for UE students, provided they meet IU's admission requirements. The program course work will be conducted at IU's Bloomington campus."
Reeder said this pairing of the two schools is a good opportunity for UE because of a new law that became effective on Jan. 1, requiring that students who wish to sit for the Certified Public Accountant examination in Indiana and most other states have 150 credit hours. Some business programs, including UE's, fall several hours short of the required credit hour total.
"The Kelley School of Business is pleased to offer this program to students beyond the Bloomington campus," said Dan R. Dalton, the IU school's dean. "We appreciate the high quality of teaching done by our peers at the University of Evansville, and we expect that our program will only enhance the quality of the education their students will have received."
IU's Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA) program enables students to earn a master's degree in one year, helps them meet the credit hour requirement to take the CPA exam, and gives students greater income potential, Reeder said.
The MPA program has two major objectives for student development: to develop lifelong career success skills and to develop in-depth, specialized knowledge in an area of financial or information systems. The program can be completed in two semesters at the IU Bloomington campus by taking 15 credit hours each semester.
Students entering the program without an accounting background will begin with an eight-week intensive program offered during the summer. In addition to traditional course work, students are immersed in a year-long module called Learning in a Professional Environment, in which they experience a research project with a corporate sponsor.
