BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University School of Music graduate student Leor Maltinski won top honors recently in the Carl Nielsen International Violin competition in New York City.
Maltinski, a student of Professor Nelli Shkolnikova, competed through four rounds with more than 40 violinists from throughout the world. The violinists played selections by Danish composers Carl Nielsen and Niels W. Gade, plus works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Mozart and Schubert.
Maltinski, who is from Oconto Falls, Wis., received a first prize award of $20,000 and an opportunity to tour Spain as a soloist with Denmark's Odense Symphony Orchestra next May. Nielsen, one of the most famous Danish composers and musicians, was from Odense. The Queen of Denmark attended the final concert in the competition on Nov. 1 in Lincoln Center.
Two members of the 10-member judging panel at the event were IU School of Music professors Mauricio Fuks and Ik-Hwan Bae.
