HELPS PROVIDE FREE VISION CARE

TO INDIANA FAMILIES IN NEED

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Optometric Association, the Indiana University School of Optometry and its faculty are again cooperating this year with the American Optometric Association's VISION USA program.

VISION USA, an acronym for "Volunteers In Service In Our Nation," is a national program wherein optometrists voluntarily provide free basic eye health and vision care services to uninsured, low-income workers and their families who have no other means of obtaining eye care.

The VISION USA state coordinator for Indiana is Dr. Steven A. Hitzeman, director of clinics at the IU School of Optometry.

Most of the free eye examinations will be done during AOA's annual "Save Our Vision Week," which this year is March 7-13, but they may be performed at any mutually agreeable time during the year.

VISION USA was launched by the AOA in 1991. Since then, more than 245,000 working Americans have received the benefits of these free eye examinations. Approximately 7,500 optometrists donate their professional time and expertise annually.

Also, numerous optical laboratories and manufacturers across the nation donate lenses and related services as part of VISION USA. The laboratories donating lenses and services in support of the Indiana VISION USA program are Walman Optical; Soderberg Optical; Bell Optical and Duffens Optical, both of Essilor; and GK Optical. The manufacturers donating frames are Creative Optics and Marchon.

For more information, contact Hitzeman at 812-855-4979 or Carol Glick, VISION USA national coordinator, at 314-991-4100, ext. 261.
