Voss named new associate vice president for telecommunications at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Brian D. Voss has been named associate vice president for telecommunications for Indiana University. The appointment was announced by Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Michael McRobbie.
Voss was named a director of the Teaching and Learning Technologies Division of University Information Technology Services (UITS) in 1997, and for the past six months also has been the acting director for data telecommunications. In his new position, Voss will be based at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), but he also will work at IU Bloomington and visit other IU campuses as needed.
"Voss was one of the key UITS staff who helped establish the outstandingly successful Microsoft Enterprise License Agreement, and he has made a major contribution with the UITS Finance Office in developing a program for life-cycle funding for equipment replacement at IU Bloomington," McRobbie said. "His accomplishments demonstrate that he has the high-level skills that are necessary to take on this complex and demanding portfolio."
As the associate vice president for telecommunications, Voss will lead the division of UITS that is responsible for the university's voice, data, and video networks and services, as well as electronic mail and messaging services. He will oversee initiatives to provide a robust fiber optic network infrastructure in Indiana, the establishment of the State GigaPoP in Indianapolis, and IU's growing role in Internet2.
Voss also will be responsible for leading the convergence of communication technologies and the development of wireless networking at IU. With his background in service, Voss will emphasize that the new technological initiatives at IU relate directly to improved services for the university community, as well as for its partners in the arena of national and international telecommunications.
In 1984-89 and 1991-93, Voss was a manager in a variety of areas in the central computing organization at IU, including computing advising and support, marketing services, telecommunications, support, network operations and production control. In 1993-94, he also was responsible for coordinating the computing organization's work in implementing the Financial Information System.
From 1994 to 1997, he was a senior manager responsible for UITS Support Services in Bloomington. From 1989 to 1991, he served as the manager of worldwide network operations for Mead Data Central. His vita includes publications and presentations related to conferences sponsored by EDUCAUSE, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services, the College and University Computer Users Association, and Sybase.
Voss has a bachelor's degree from the Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering and has done graduate work in IU's Kelley School of Business.
