BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Former Boston Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Joseph Silverstein will direct the Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert Sunday (Nov. 14) at 8 p.m. EST (1:00 Greenwich Mean Time) that will be broadcast live on the World Wide Web.

Silverstein will direct the premier orchestra of the School of Music's five full-size orchestras for the event in the Musical Arts Center, which will be open to the public without charge. He has conducted more than 100 orchestras, including the Utah Symphony.

Featured will be two student violin soloists in works by Ravel and Saint-Saens, plus Mussorgsky/Ravel's Pictures at an Exhibition. The finale will be Ravel's choreographic poem La Valse. The student soloists will be Tai Murray of Bloomington, a student of Distinguished Professor Franco Gulli, for Havanaise by Saint-Saens, and Sarah Kapustin of Milwaukee, Wis., a student of Professor Mauricio Fuks, for Tzigane by Ravel.

The IU Philharmonic has performed at Carnegie Hall and in Paris. The orchestra has appeared under Gerard Schwarz, Robert Shaw, Kurt Masur, Leonard Bernstein and other leading conductors.

The Internet broadcast, the last of four involving IU School of Music events in November, represents a pioneering use of computer technology. A jazz ensemble program was presented Nov. 1, a university orchestra program Nov. 3, and an IU Opera Theater production Nov. 12.
