IU unveils "dorm for the 21st century"
Sept. 18, 2000
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Division of Residential Programs and Services (RPS) will rededicate the renovated Willkie Residence Center in a ceremony Friday (Sept. 22) at 1 p.m. on the Bloomington campus.
The $26 million project took a year and a half to complete, and is a result of input provided by students, administrators, contractors and architects.
The complex features more than 600 rooms with semi-private bathroom facilities, and a number of two- and three-bedroom suites and apartments. Both towers are wired with high-speed Internet connections, and residents are protected with security cameras and other high-tech safety features. The Willkie Center building features a computer cluster, library, convenience store, classrooms, an auditorium and a lounge area.
"The reinvestment in Willkie Residence Center was critical to the IU housing program," said Patrick Connor, RPS executive director. "The renovations have created a residence hall that provides the style of living on-campus that upper-class students desire."
IU officials including President Myles Brand, Chancellor Kenneth Gros Louis and Associate Chancellor Bruce Jacobs will speak at Friday's event, and several IU trustees will attend.
In advance of the rededication, media will have the opportunity to tour Willkie during an open house on Thursday (Sept. 21) at 10 a.m. Building staff and residents will be available to comment, and guided tours will be offered.
