State awards $234,000 contract to IU to train government employees

April 2, 2001

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A $234,000 contract with the state Department of Workforce Development will enable the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies to provide training opportunities for the 1,200 Indiana citizens working for the department and for its partner organizations charged with implementing the federal Workforce Investment Act statewide.

Glenda Murray, director of professional development for the SCS Office of Learning Partnerships, said the school will work with the DWD Lifelong Learning Institute to broker at least seven major training programs. Several of these will be done in conjunction with other Indiana state colleges and universities. At least one will be a distance learning program.

Participants in the training programs will earn continuing education units and, in some cases, certificates. In addition, the school and the institute will create a credentialing program for DWD trainers.

"One of the major themes in recent years in economic and community development has been the need for employees with additional training and skills," said SCS Dean Jeremy Dunning. "This partnership is a major step toward meeting that need and will enhance the availability, diversity and quality of training to Indiana citizens responsible for implementing the Workforce Investment Act."

DWD Commissioner Craig E. Hartzer explained, "The partnership between the School of Continuing Studies and the Department of Workforce Development will ensure that DWD and its partner organizations will receive up-to-date training and professional development opportunities. The Workforce Investment Act is changing the way we do business as partners and presenting opportunities for us to improve customer service. The LLI's vision is for staff to grow personally and professionally from participating in training opportunities and lifelong learning initiatives."
