Jody Lyneť Madeira, associate professor of law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, talks about the concept of closure and what it means in relation to mass tragedies such as 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing. For survivors and victims' family members, she says, the death of Timothy McVeigh and Osama bin Laden doesn't bring closure as "absolute finality." Instead, they must continue to perform the difficult emotional work of integrating new information into the ongoing narrative of a horrific event. Other Indiana University faculty members share their insights here.
