Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) has awarded $405,450 to the Center for Criminal Justice Research (CCJR) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for a project that will help improve the effectiveness of state-funded criminal justice initiatives.

Randy Steidl, who was nearly executed for a crime he didn't commit and went on to become the public face of the abolition of the death penalty in Illinois, will tell his story later this month during visits to Indiana University campuses in Bloomington and Indianapolis. Steidl will speak at IU Bloomington on April 12 and at IUPUI on April 14.

Indiana's increased restrictions on teen drivers have resulted in a steep reduction in car accidents involving young drivers, according to an analysis of crash data by the Indiana Public Policy Institute. The report, "Effects of Graduated Driver Licensing on Crash Outcomes in Indiana," finds there were hundreds fewer accidents as a result of restrictions that took effect in July 2010.

The number of traffic collisions and fatal collisions in Indiana declined significantly in 2009 from the previous year, according to a comprehensive analysis of crash data released recently by an Indiana University research center. But traffic collisions remain a serious issue, both in human and economic terms, the report shows. Some 46,590 people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in Indiana in 2009. And the economic cost of vehicle collisions in the state exceeded $4.3 billion for the year.
