For the second time, two units at Indiana University are co-sponsoring the Symposium on Teaching and Learning Indigenous Languages of Latin America, or STLILLA, focusing on the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages of Latin America. The symposium begins Sunday (Oct. 30) at the University of Notre Dame.

The Indiana Department of Education and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett have named Riverview Middle School teacher Melanie Park, who holds two Indiana University School of Education degrees, as Indiana's 2012 Teacher of the Year. Bennett presented Park with the award during a surprise ceremony today (Oct. 10) at her school in Huntington, Ind.

A Saturday (Oct. 2) workshop at the Indiana University School of Education will emphasize best practices for implementing and advocating for teaching world languages in schools. The Indiana Network for Early Language Learning (IN-NELL) and "Bridges: Children, Languages, World," a project of IU's Center for the Study of Global Change, is holding its fall conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wright Education Building at 201 N. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has named Gerald Campano, associate professor in the Department of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education of the Indiana University School of Education, as the 2009 recipient of the David H Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English, one of the most distinguished awards in English language education. The organization selected Campano for his 2007 book Immigrant Students and Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Remembering (Teachers College Press).
