Around 200 of the top literacy researchers in the U.S. and world will be at the Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington this weekend for the National Council of Teachers of English Assembly for Research's mid-winter conference.

The Indiana University School of Education has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund a partnership between the School of Education at IUPUI and the Indianapolis Public Schools to implement a five-year project to better prepare teachers of English Language Learners before they begin their careers, develop skills of current teachers, and revise teaching methods of IU faculty.

The latest cohort of teachers has completed the Tandem Certification of Indiana Teachers (TACIT) program, a federally-funded program offered by the Indiana University School of Education to more quickly certify English as a Second Language teachers for the state of Indiana. Seventeen teachers picked up TACIT completion certificates during this week's retreat on the Bloomington campus.

The National Teacher of the Year, Kimberly Oliver, will appear in Bloomington this month to share her inspiring story of how she raised academic performance at a low performing school just north of downtown Washington, D.C. through important collaborations and despite substantial obstacles, such as poverty and language issues. She is speaking on Feb. 12 in Bloomington at the Indiana University School of Education.
