A 15-year-old piano student in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music has won the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's Young Musicians Contest and will be performing with the orchestra July 18 and 19. Jingxuan Zhang, a piano student of IU Professor Arnaldo Cohen, will be performing with the orchestra this month.

Elinor Ostrom, the Arthur F. Bentley professor of political science and professor of public and environmental affairs at Indiana University, has been installed as Robert A. Dahl Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

The Geological Society of America has named Indiana University Bloomington geologist Maria Mastalerz the winner of the 2008 Gilbert H. Cady Award. Mastalerz, 51, is the youngest person ever to receive the award, and only the second woman to be so honored. Mastalerz is a senior scientist at the Indiana Geological Survey, a research institute of Indiana University, and is a graduate faculty member in IU's Department of Geological Sciences, where she advises graduate students.
