With only 50 remaining speakers, tribe's Nakota language to be preserved by IU anthropologists

The National Endowment for the Humanities' "We the People" project has awarded a group of Indiana University anthropologists $250,000 to transcribe, translate and publish the oral literature of the Assiniboine, a northern Plains Indian tribe with only about 50 living members still fluent in the tribal language of Nakota.   Full Story >>

Actress Tantoo Cardinal to speak at IU's Native Film Series on Feb. 20

Tantoo Cardinal, a widely recognized Native American actress who has appeared in more than 50 films, including "Dances With Wolves" and "Smoke Signals," will visit Indiana University as part of its third annual Native Film Series on Wednesday, Feb. 20.   Full Story >>

COMU awards presented

The Indiana University Commission on Multicultural Understanding recently honored five individuals and one program with its 2006-07 COMU awards. The awards, created in 1994, are given in recognition of individuals or groups actively supporting, participating in or encouraging the exploration of cultural diversity in and around the Indiana University Bloomington campus.   Full Story >>
