International Programs
In response to China's growing economic importance and other factors, Mandarin Chinese is becoming one of the fastest growing languages for students in secondary schools and colleges nationwide. At Indiana University, middle and high school teachers are immersed in an intensive, two-and-a-half-week course on teaching Mandarin Chinese.

The School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Indiana University has signed or renewed international agreements with six universities in China, including Peking University School of Public Health, Hong Kong Baptist University in Hong Kong, Beijing Sport University and Shanghai Sports University. The School of HPER also renewed an agreement with Taiwan National Sports University.

The Liberian Collections Project at Indiana University has been awarded a grant from the Endangered Archives Programme of the British Library to conserve, organize and digitize approximately 6,500 historic photographs from the records of William V.S. Tubman, Liberia's longest-serving president.

University Dean Emeritus of the IU School of Education Donald Warren will speak at four Chinese universities during a two-week trip that will take him and his wife Beverly across the country. Appearing at the invitation of Chinese educators, Warren will speak about American higher education at Peking University and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Beijing, as well as at Yunnan Nationalities University in Kunming and Nanchang Hangkong University in Jiangxi Province.

Today's (May 2) news conference featuring Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been canceled, but her speech to invited guests and news media is expected to take place. President Sirleaf's flight to Bloomington was delayed due to inclement weather this afternoon.

For the past two years, Indiana University faculty member Amos Sawyer has traveled back and forth between Bloomington and Liberia, where he chairs a Governance Commission that is charting an ambitious course of reform.
