That approval was just the beginning: Indiana's Commission for Higher Education approved the project in December 2004, and in July 2005 the State Budget Committee approved giving $12 million to IU to fund the construction. Construction on the building began in 2007 and was finished earlier this year.

Although the fluorescent molecule is not yet ready for market, its Indiana University Bloomington creators report in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (now online) that the tool is already able to sense cyanide below the toxicity threshold established by the World Health Organization.
