Indiana University officials noted the passing of Indianapolis-area entrepreneur Jesse Cox with expressions of condolences and deep appreciation for his extraordinary and longstanding generosity and support for IU. Cox, who died May 12 at his home in Carmel, Ind., and his late wife, Beulah, have committed a total of $85 million or more to IU for scholarships for students. This represents the largest gift ever received by IU from individuals, and also the largest individual gift for scholarships.

Indiana University will honor Indiana University President Emeritus Adam W. Herbert with the unveiling of his official portrait, on May 1 (Thursday), at 4:30 p.m., in the East Lobby on the Mezzanine Level of the Indiana Memorial Union Building. The general public is invited to attend and a reception is scheduled for immediately after the ceremony.

Every April since 1951, the Little 500 at Indiana University has marked the beginning of spring and the coming end of another academic year. This year is no different. The men's and women's bicycle races are scheduled for April 11-12 on the Bloomington campus. The Little Fifty will take place on April 10.

By combining endowment earnings with state and federal financial aid programs for students, Indiana University Bloomington was able to cover 98 percent of the so-called "sticker price" of attendance for last fall's incoming freshmen from lower-income families. That was one of the key points made by IU President Michael A. McRobbie in a letter responding to a request for information from U.S. Senators Max Baucus (D-Montana) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

Indiana University Bloominton's newest science building, Simon Hall, has won high honors in R&D Magazine's 2008 "Lab of the Year," an architecture competition for research facilities. Madison, Wisc.-based Flad & Associates, which designed Simon Hall, submitted their contest entry in January. Flad architects worked closely with IU architects to design a 141,000-square-foot structure that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers in fields as disparate as biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
