A new report from the Indiana University Center for Evaluation and Education Policy finds that achievement gaps among high ability students from different economic, racial and linguistic backgrounds in the U.S. are large and growing -- and some of the top achieving groups aren't performing as well as in the past. The report estimates it could take 72 years to close the gap between whites and Hispanics in grade four mathematics; 31 years to close the gap between whites and blacks; 128 years to close the gap between grade four English Language Learners (ELL) and non-ELL students.   Full Story >>

Most colleges are learning what students are learning

Contrary to what many observers think, findings from a national study released today (Oct. 26) show that gathering information about what undergraduates learn during their studies is commonplace in most U.S. colleges and universities. Virtual learning viewed as increasingly viable option for Indiana students, survey finds

A new survey of Indiana superintendents, principals and school counselors finds that a majority see virtual learning as a way to enhance academic offerings in public education. Sixty percent of respondents to the "2009 Survey of Virtual Learning in Indiana," conducted by the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at the Indiana University School of Education, said they are offering or may offer online courses in six different areas, including alternative education, gifted and talented education, and instruction for homebound students. But just half the respondents indicated their school would pay for virtual instruction and cited instructional cost as a barrier to offering more online courses.   Full Story >>

Need for Chinese language teachers growing, IU responding
