As part of the inaugural Indiana University Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music has assembled a "Summer Music" series of more than 40 free and ticketed events from June 20 through Aug. 10. In all, the series offers an array of world-class concerts featuring orchestra, chamber music, piano, band, percussion, opera, chorus and other special events. Highlights this year include violin virtuoso and Jacobs faculty member Joshua Bell, legendary pianist Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler and eclectic string trio Time for Three.

A group of fourth- through sixth-grade students from the Gary Community School Corporation's Watson K-6 Boys Academy Drum Corps will perform at noon on Monday (Feb. 21) at the IU School of Education, along with students from the IU Jacobs School of Music Department of Percussion. The performance in the Wright Education Building atrium is part of ArtsWeek.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music continues to be a contender on the nominee list for the annual Grammy Awards, to be presented live on Feb. 13, 2011, on CBS by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. Among Jacobs-related nominees are faculty member Michael Spiro and alumnae Jamie Barton and Vivica Genaux.

Jake Harpster, who received a bachelor's degree in percussion performance last May from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, won the Yamaha Young Performing Artists (YYPA) Competition June 19-22 at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. Harpster received $5,000 in retail credit towards a professional model Yamaha instrument and an opportunity for a New York City performance debut at Yamaha Artist Service, Inc.
