Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced today that he has chosen Eugene R. "Gene" Tempel to succeed Curtis R. Simic as president of the IU Foundation. Tempel will be the seventh leader of the nonprofit organization established in 1936 as Indiana University's fundraising partner.

Indiana University alumni elected Patrick A. Shoulders, Evansville, Ind., to a third three-year term as IU trustee today (June 30). Shoulders received 14,507 of the 32,552 valid votes cast.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie today (June 20) announced completion of the "backbone" of a high-speed, fiber-optic network that will provide every public and private college campus in Indiana with digital communications at least 20 times faster than a typical home Internet connection. Known as I-Light, the network involves more than 1,000 miles of fiber-optic cable reaching every corner of the state and is larger, per capita, than similar networks in neighboring states. More than 40 higher education institutions will use the system for educational and research purposes.

On Friday (June 20), Indiana University President Michael McRobbie will announce in South Bend, Ind., completion of the I-Light "backbone" system. I-Light will provide high-speed, broadband connectivity through a fiber-optic network to more than 40 higher education campuses -- both public and private -- in Indiana. Campus hook-ups are now under way and are expected to be completed by year's end. The I-Light system involves more than 1,000 miles of fiber-optic cable extending to all four corners of Indiana.

The Indiana University Faculty Podcasting Initiative will support more than 60 innovative faculty members as they explore the potential of podcasting in higher education and student learning. Supported by Apple and AT&T with equipment and software -- and with the guidance of the IU centers for teaching and learning -- faculty projects will commence in the fall semester of 2008.
