Indiana University has announced the creation of a Web site -- www.stimulus.iu.edu -- to provide information about federal grants the university has received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Through Aug. 31, IU has received $16,980,925 as a result of the federal economic stimulus act.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie today (July 16) announced that Informatics Dean Robert B. Schnabel will serve as interim vice president for research while a search continues to permanently fill the position. Schnabel will continue as dean of the School of Informatics while also assuming the leadership role for pursuing and broadening new opportunities for research activities at Indiana University's eight campuses.

Indiana University nuclear physics professor Mike Snow's investigations into the weak interactions of low energy neutrons will advance using equipment funded by the IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research and then put into use at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

A $4.15 million, four-year National Institutes of Health grant will enable researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine to conduct the first health study of teenage boys using cellular telephones. The researchers, led by Dr. Dennis Fortenberry, professor of pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, will use text messaging to follow 72 males, ages 14-17 years, for three years. The adolescent males will be provided with cell phones and unlimited, free text messaging as long as they remain enrolled in the study.

Three finalists for the vice president for research position at Indiana University will visit the Bloomington campus as well as IUPUI during the next two weeks. Finalists will meet with faculty, staff and representatives from IU's regional campuses. Following those visits, the university search committee that identified the finalists will meet again and make further recommendations to IU President Michael McRobbie.

More than 75 scientists, students and university administrators celebrated the opening of the Indiana University Research and Teaching Preserve's new Field Laboratory, an ecology and environmental sciences research station and classroom facility on the Bloomington campus. The field lab dedication was timed to coincide with Earth Day, April 22.
