Indiana University Bloomington junior Nathaniel Sims is a 2013 Beinecke Scholar, one of only 20 students nationwide to receive the honor. A Hutton Honors College scholar majoring in linguistics and East Asian languages and cultures who will graduate in 2014, Sims spent this school year in Chengdu, China, through IU's Chinese Flagship Program.

Winners of the 2012-13 Provost's Award for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity are Amal Akbik and Andrew Johns in the category of Social and Applied Sciences; Courtney Burroughs in Natural and Mathematical Sciences; Angela Ratigan in Arts and Humanities; Ross Smith in Professional Inquiry; and Larrea Young in Performing and Creative Arts.

About 20 IU undergraduate women participated in a full day of tours and meetings at Argonne National Laboratory just outside Chicago as part of IU initiatives focused on science, technology and mathematics careers. Argonne employs 1,250 scientists, and also 650 graduate and undergraduate students, who work on some of the most advanced research topics related to energy, the environment and national security.
