Indiana University Bloomington faculty members Selene Carter, George Pinney and Elizabeth Shea have been selected to receive funding in 2012 from the Fran Snygg Grant for Artistic Collaboration and the Fran Snygg Endowment Fund.

The emphasis of "Contemporary Voices," the upcoming annual faculty/guest artist concert presented by the Indiana University Dance Theatre, is in no uncertain terms on "contemporary." A couple in their tighty whities dancing with nothing but a mattress. An inflatable sky dancer (yes, like the ones flapping at car dealerships). Original works by IU faculty members, one of whom uses intricate, high-tech embellishments, and another who hopes to see audience members calling the shots in her improvisational piece. Turning from its traditional nod to pioneers and masters of contemporary dance, the concert features only works created in the past decade.

Gary Sailes, sport sociologist in the Department of Kinesiology in Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has received the 2011 North American Society for the Sociology of Sport Distinguished Service Award. Sailes received the award, which recognizes his scholarship, teaching and service to the discipline of sport sociology, during the society's annual conference in Minneapolis.

Former Hoosier standout and 2010 Ryder Cup member Jeff Overton will present a check for $50,000 to Indiana University to support the Play Golf America University program. The presentation, made by the Indiana PGA Section, will take place during the Indiana-Kentucky men's basketball game Dec. 10 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington.
