Quadruplets enter IU courtesy of 21st Century Covenant Scholars Program

It's hard enough to put one kid through college these days. Cheryl and Joe Torline of Madison, Ind., had to figure out a way to send quadruplets to college this fall -- simultaneously -- on the heels of their eldest daughter, Amber, completing her college education at Purdue in 2005. Vanessa, Allison, Melanie and Eric Torline, who start classes at IU next week, will have the majority of their college educations covered through a combination of support from 21st Century Scholars and IU's Covenant, now entering its second year.   Full Story >>

IU Bloomington launches effort to enhance support for first-year students

Long known for its programs to ease the transition from high school to college life, Indiana University Bloomington is launching an initiative to provide support for students throughout their first year on campus. The Office of First Year Experience Programs will work with various campus units to enhance existing transition programs and establish new opportunities for beginning students.   Full Story >>

This week, the Indiana University Task Force on Campus Sustainability is releasing the "Indiana Sustainable Student," a guide to sustainable living practices for students that features a range of issues, from water and energy conservation to alternative transportation and sustainable food.   Full Story >>

Drinking age debate just one part of college alcohol problem

The call to consider reducing the legal drinking age from 21 to 18 could spur some valuable discussion, but alone won't solve the college student alcohol problem, according to Gerardo Gonzalez, University Dean of the IU School of Education. Indiana University Bloomington expects another record-setting freshman class

Although final numbers won't be available for several weeks, officials say Indiana University Bloomington's 2008-09 freshman class will be the campus' largest and most academically talented ever, and one of its most diverse. The number of first-year students will top the previous record of 7,259 set in the fall of 2006. Average SAT scores are higher, and the number of minority and international students in the freshman class also appears to have increased.   Full Story >>

IU Summer Program in Sustainability Symposium to showcase student work

On Aug. 15, students engaged in Indiana University's Summer Program in Sustainability will showcase the projects that they worked on over the summer. The second annual Indiana University Sustainability Internship Symposium will include oral and poster presentations and a lunch reception hosted by RPS Dining Services, featuring local and organic foods.   Full Story >>
