A new report from the National Academy of Sciences, part of which was co-authored by Indiana University School of Law--Bloomington Professor Fred H. Cate, casts doubt on the effectiveness, lawfulness and appropriateness of using data-based tools such as data-mining and biometrics to fight terrorism.

The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security announced that Indiana University is among the nation's first universities to be designated National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research. The designation complements IU's selection in August 2007 as a National Center of Academic Excellence for Information Assurance Education.

Computerworld magazine has named Fred H. Cate, an Indiana University law professor and director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at IU, one of the "best privacy advisers in 2007." Cate, distinguished professor at the IU School of Law-Bloomington, is the only academic on the 25-person list of top individual privacy experts in the United States and Europe.
