Indiana University has named David Sobotka as director of engagement for Evansville and southwest Indiana. Currently the director of Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program (TAP) offices in Jasper and Evansville, Sobotka will now serve as the face of both IU and Purdue for economic development in Evansville and southwest Indiana.

The Diversity Annual Report Committee (DARC) meeting which was scheduled for today (Nov. 19) has been rescheduled. The meeting will be held instead on Monday (Nov. 23) at 9:30 a.m. in Library Conference Center 110.

Indiana University has announced the opening of its newly created Office of Engagement in Evansville. The new office will provide southwest Indiana with a 'front door' to IU, directly connecting the region to the university. By serving as a gateway for the community to access IU's resources, the office will enable the university to play a greater role in contributing to economic development in that region.

Indiana University's 2009 Ethics Bowl team placed third last week in the Central States Ethics Bowl Regional competition, ensuring its place in upcoming national competition. The team is comprised of five undergraduate students and is sponsored by the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at Indiana University.

Christopher S. Peebles, Indiana University professor emeritus of anthropology, has been awarded the Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion by IU President Michael McRobbie. Recognized for his prominent achievement and dedicated service, Peebles is a distinguished expert on the ancient past whose contributions to IU's high tech present and future also are recognized with this honor.

Indiana University Southeast's part-time MBA program climbed to ninth place in the rankings of part-time MBA programs released by BusinessWeek magazine in its issue dated Nov. 16. A gain of nine spots since the list last appeared, the ranking marks IU Southeast as the third highest ranked part-time MBA program in the Midwest and the only school in Indiana or the Greater Louisville area to achieve a top-10 national ranking from BusinessWeek.

Indiana University is ranked 15th nationally and tied for third in the Big Ten with 14 recipients of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants, according to a recent report in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Additionally, five IU gradaute students have received Fulbright-Hays Grants. Together, they will study in 18 countries on research projects covering a variety of disciplines.

Indiana University today announced a new event for spring Commencement activities at the Bloomington campus, adding a separate ceremony for graduate students receiving master's and doctoral degrees. The new event will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 7, at Assembly Hall. Commencement ceremonies recognizing undergraduate students will be conducted as previously announced on Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Indiana University will celebrate its international breadth with the third annual IU World's Fare, featuring international food, song, dance, exhibits and conversation on Nov. 11 (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall. Faculty, staff, students and members of the Bloomington community are welcome to join the festivities.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates will present the commencement address at Indiana University Bloomington's 2009 Winter Commencement, Dec. 19, at Assembly Hall, it was announced today (Monday). During the ceremony, he also will receive an honorary doctoral degree from IU. Gates, who holds a master's degree in history from IU, has served as the nation's 22nd defense secretary since December 2006, when he was sworn in under former President George W. Bush. He is the only defense secretary in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected president (President Barack Obama). Before assuming his current position, he was president of Texas A&M University, one of the nation's largest universities.

Indiana University School of Education Dean Gerardo M. Gonzalez issued a statement Thursday (Oct. 22) in response to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's speech titled "Teacher Preparation: Reforming the Uncertain Profession," calling Duncan's speech challenging and encouraging.

A diverse panel of Indiana University professors will speak on the issue of health care reform Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union. This free, open-to-the-public event is co-sponsored by the Indiana Memorial Union Board and the Teachable Moments Committee of the Commission on Multicultural Understanding.

Recognizing the key role played by volunteer leaders in service and philanthropy, the Indiana University Foundation is honoring three individuals as outstanding "Partners in Philanthropy" for Indiana University. The awards are being presented today (Oct. 13) to Leonard Goldstein of Fort Wayne, Jacqueline O'Donnell, M.D. of Indiana polis, and Don Earnhart of Indianapolis by IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU Foundation President Gene Tempel.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced Oct. 13 that the "Matching the Promise" fundraising campaign for the IU Bloomington campus has surpassed the $1 billion threshold on the way to its $1.1 billion goal.

The new North End Zone Facility at Indiana University Bloomington's Memorial Stadium will be formally dedicated in a ceremony at the stadium on Friday (Oct. 2) at 2:30 p.m., with IU President Michael A. McRobbie presiding. The ceremony also will rename the new structure the North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center.

At 1:30 p.m. Monday (Sept. 28), Indiana University emergency personnel will respond to a full-scale simulation of an incident that might include fire, chemical spills, biological incidents, flooding and/or gas inhalation. The setting for the scenario will be Jordan Hall.

The IU Bloomington Diversity Committee will meet Thursday (Sept. 24) at noon in Room 256 of the Department of Communication and Culture building, 800 E. Indiana University President Michael McRobbie announced today the appointment of IU Bloomington senior Miles Taylor as the university's inaugural Presidential Student Intern. Taylor, from La Porte, Ind., is a Wells Scholar with a 4.0 grade-point average and was recently honored with the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship.

Indiana University announced today (Sept. 17) that it has postponed the annual State of the University Address. Originally scheduled for Sept. 22, the address has been moved to Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union.
