The Atkins Living Learning Center Memorial Weekend will take place at IU Bloomington this Friday through Sunday (Nov. 6-8). As part of the weekend, 37 elementary school students from the Bloomingdale School, a public school in Manhattan, will visit IU.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates will present the commencement address at Indiana University Bloomington's 2009 Winter Commencement, Dec. 19, at Assembly Hall, it was announced today (Monday). During the ceremony, he also will receive an honorary doctoral degree from IU. Gates, who holds a master's degree in history from IU, has served as the nation's 22nd defense secretary since December 2006, when he was sworn in under former President George W. Bush. He is the only defense secretary in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected president (President Barack Obama). Before assuming his current position, he was president of Texas A&M University, one of the nation's largest universities.

Indiana University Bloomington will celebrate its 179th Commencement on Dec. 20 (Saturday) at 10 a.m. in Assembly Hall. The procession of students will begin at 9:15 a.m., and the commencement address will be given by Richard C. Atkinson, president emeritus of the University of California. IU President Michael A. McRobbie will preside over the commencement ceremony in which 1,760 students are eligible to participate.

For the fourth year in a row, Indiana University has emerged victorious from the blood battle against Purdue University. IU won the annual Indiana vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge, a friendly competition that encourages Indiana residents to donate blood.

This fall marks 100 years since the Indiana University School of Education commenced its first semester in 1908. Since opening its doors, with four professors and 189 students that first semester, the school has become one of the premier institutions of research and teacher preparation in the country. The school is formally marking its 100th anniversary, Nov. 16-20, with a series of events.
