Recognizing the key role played by volunteer leaders in service and philanthropy, the Indiana University Foundation is honoring three individuals as outstanding "Partners in Philanthropy" for Indiana University. The awards are being presented today (Oct. 13) to Leonard Goldstein of Fort Wayne, Jacqueline O'Donnell, M.D. of Indiana polis, and Don Earnhart of Indianapolis by IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU Foundation President Gene Tempel.

Twenty-one Indiana University undergraduates have been honored with selection as Cox Scholars for the 2009-10 academic year.

The global reach and innovative spirit of the Indiana University School of Education is reflected in the 2009 honorees for the school's Annual Recognition Dinner on Friday (Sept. 11). The three recipients of the IU School of Education Distinguished Alumni award include education leaders in Korea and Indonesia as well as the former dean who helped build national recognition for what was then known as the IU Department of Afro-American Affairs. IU Foundation president Gene Tempel will receive the distinguished alumni award from the Higher Education and Student Affairs program in the School of Education.

Michael A. McRobbie, president of Indiana University and chair of the IU Foundation board, announced that the Foundation has elected two IU trustees to its board of directors and elected Harry Gonso as vice chair. Trustees William R. Cast, M.D., and Tom Reilly Jr. join trustee vice chair Patrick A. Shoulders on the Foundation board. Gonso was elected to the Foundation board in 1990 and re-elected after serving as chief of staff for Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Indiana University Foundation President Gene Tempel announced today that Marsha (Marti) Heil will join the Foundation as senior vice president for development on Oct. 1. Heil was selected after a nationwide search.

Indiana University has received national recognition for excellence in fundraising from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The organization presented IU its CASE -- WealthEngine Award for Educational Fundraising, Overall Performance for the fourth time since 1999.

Five Indiana University students have been chosen as the inaugural recipients of the Onward! Curtis R. Simic Scholarship for Leaders at IU Bloomington.

While both the men's and women's Little 500 races on April 24-25 are expected to again be competitive, Indiana University Student Foundation leaders say the true mission of the event -- to raise money for student scholarships -- has become particularly relevant. "The more spectators we can get to the race this year, the more tickets we will sell, leading to more funding for scholarships next year," said Jenny Bruffey, director of the IU Student Foundation. "It is absolutely our goal to pack Bill Armstrong Stadium this year."

The William T. Patten Foundation, under the auspices of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, announced the Patten Lecture Series for 2009-2010. Lecturers will be Henry Louis Gates Jr., Andrew H. Knoll, and W. J. T. Mitchell.

With a record $408.6 million in Total Voluntary Support in fiscal year 2008, IU moved up in the rankings in every category.

The Evan and Susan Bayh Foundation has made a gift of $50,000 to IU as part of its Matching the Promise fundraising campaign for the Bloomington campus. The Bayh Family Scholarship endowment will provide financial aid for students who are admitted to IU Bloomington as 21st Century Scholars.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie Dec. 4 announced the naming of the Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington in honor of Indianapolis business and community leader Michael S. "Mickey" Maurer, J.D. '67. The school will be renamed the Michael Maurer School of Law in recognition of Maurer's longtime support for the school and his $35 million gift for law student scholarships. The scholarships will be known as the Michael and Janie Maurer Scholarships.

A new $1.3 million scholarship endowment for student leaders at Indiana University Bloomington honors Curt Simic, president of the IU Foundation. Simic will retire in June after 20 years as head of the foundation, which raises gift funds for IU and invests its endowment.

Indiana University officials noted the passing of Indianapolis-area entrepreneur Jesse Cox with expressions of condolences and deep appreciation for his extraordinary and longstanding generosity and support for IU. Cox, who died May 12 at his home in Carmel, Ind., and his late wife, Beulah, have committed a total of $85 million or more to IU for scholarships for students. This represents the largest gift ever received by IU from individuals, and also the largest individual gift for scholarships.

Indiana University will honor Indiana University President Emeritus Adam W. Herbert with the unveiling of his official portrait, on May 1 (Thursday), at 4:30 p.m., in the East Lobby on the Mezzanine Level of the Indiana Memorial Union Building. The general public is invited to attend and a reception is scheduled for immediately after the ceremony.
