The new institute will combine the complementary academic strengths of the two universities into a single research and teaching enterprise with expertise that encompasses a broad range of Asian countries.

Herbert told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday (Oct. 6). Herbert said IU and many other academic institutions are seeing a significant drop in applications from prospective foreign students, and he warned that this trend could have a harmful effect on higher education in America if it is not reversed.

Currently on its first tour of the United States, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State, the UNAM Choir will spend three days in Indiana. They will perform, give workshops and interviews, and meet with fellow musicians and students on IU's Bloomington and East campuses.
