Indiana University ranks fourth in the Big Ten, ninth among public universities, and 21st among all colleges and universities in the nation in the amount of support it received from the private sector in fiscal 2009.

Indiana University has identified $29.3 million in base budget cuts but still must find another $58.9 million in one-time cuts to fully comply with mandated reductions in state aid. Neil Theobald, vice president and chief financial officer, today issued a progress report on how the university is responding to the reduced level of state funding it expects to receive this year and next.

Indiana University moved into the top 30 for the first time in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's rankings of the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges." IU, which ranks 28th overall, was third among Big Ten universities.

Indiana University President Michael A. "While we greatly regret the necessity of budget cuts of this magnitude, it remains essential that we implement them in ways that preserve and protect the quality of our teaching and research missions at Indiana University," said McRobbie. "However, no one should underestimate the very serious challenge that this deep cut represents nor the impact it will have on IU's broader contributions to the state."

Indiana University has achieved $177 million in operating expense reductions as part of an ongoing university-wide cost-containment effort, university officials announced today (Dec. 16). Over the next decade, officials added, IU will realize nearly $1 billion in cost savings from this effort.

To help the Indiana University School of Medicine tap that powerful combination of science and medicine Lilly Endowment Inc. has given the school $60 million, university and Endowment officials announced Tuesday (Dec. 15).

IU announced that it has received a $1 million gift from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation to support efforts to plan and begin to establish an accredited school of public health at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Indiana University today announced a new event for spring Commencement activities at the Bloomington campus, adding a separate ceremony for graduate students receiving master's and doctoral degrees. The new event will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 7, at Assembly Hall. Commencement ceremonies recognizing undergraduate students will be conducted as previously announced on Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates will present the commencement address at Indiana University Bloomington's 2009 Winter Commencement, Dec. 19, at Assembly Hall, it was announced today (Monday). During the ceremony, he also will receive an honorary doctoral degree from IU. Gates, who holds a master's degree in history from IU, has served as the nation's 22nd defense secretary since December 2006, when he was sworn in under former President George W. Bush. He is the only defense secretary in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected president (President Barack Obama). Before assuming his current position, he was president of Texas A&M University, one of the nation's largest universities.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie today (Oct. 28) will announce a campaign to create an endowed faculty chair in cancer research in commemoration of the late Myles Brand, the university's 16th president.

Indiana University officials will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday, Oct. 17, for a project that will renovate the University Theater and convert it to a state-of-the-art cinema facility. The improvements also include added classroom, rehearsal and performance space for the Department of Theatre and Drama.

Recognizing the key role played by volunteer leaders in service and philanthropy, the Indiana University Foundation is honoring three individuals as outstanding "Partners in Philanthropy" for Indiana University.
