Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org, the world's first person-to-person micro-lending Web site, will speak at Indiana University Bloomington next Thursday (Sept. 24).

The Center for Applied Economics and Policy Research at Indiana University Bloomington will co-sponsor a conference this week in Princeton, N.J., aimed at bringing macroeconomic research to bear on policy issues. The conference, "Monetary-Fiscal Policy Interactions, Expectations, and Dynamics in the Current Economic Crisis," will take place Friday and Saturday (May 22-23) at Princeton University.

The Department of Economics at Indiana University Bloomington will serve as host this weekend for the 2009 Midwest Macroeconomics Meetings, a gathering at which scholars from around the world will present papers and discuss issues in economics. More than 160 economists will attend the meetings, taking place from May 15-17.

With economies around the world suffering through what could become the worst downturn since the Great Depression, Indiana University economists will share their insights and analysis in a symposium intended for students, faculty, staff and the general public. "Worldwide Economic Crisis: Proximate Causes, Historical Perspective and Policy Responses," will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 3 in room 100 of Woodburn Hall.

Today (Dec. 5), the U.S. Labor Department released statistics showing that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November, which was the most since 1972. Bill Witte, associate professor of economics and co-director of the Center for Econometric Model Research at Indiana University, is available to offer some perspective.

Researchers from several disciplines will bring an academic focus to the growing problem of childhood and adolescent obesity with a conference Sept. 4-5 at Indiana University Bloomington. The conference, titled "Cognitive, Behavioral and Economic Approaches to Childhood and Adolescent Obesity," will feature presentations by internationally known experts from the fields of economics, nutrition, marketing, biostatistics and exercise.

A paper co-written by Indiana University economics professor Michael Alexeev takes issue with the widespread idea that there is a "natural resource curse" that puts countries with oil or mineral wealth at a disadvantage when it comes to economic growth. The paper also shows that a common explanation for the curse -- that an abundance of oil or other point-source resources causes countries to have lower-quality civic institutions -- isn't true.

James B. Bullard, who holds a doctorate in economics from Indiana University Bloomington, has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis by the bank's board of directors. Bullard will assume his new duties on April 1.

Indiana University will host its first multi-disciplinary conference on obesity. The main purpose of "Obesity: Causes, Consequences and Policy Challenges" is to bring together scholars who have an interest in researching the issues and to look for common ground for working together.

With records being set for the price of a barrel of crude oil, it's becoming more difficult for economists to look forward confidently. In the new forecast released Aug. 23 by the Center for Econometric Model Research at IU, the control forecast is relatively sanguine -- about 3.5 percent growth nationally and 2.6 percent growth in Indiana during the second half of this year.
