Leonard Slatkin conducts IU Philharmonic and renowned composer and pianist Michel Camilo
March 23, 8 p.m., IU Auditorium, Bloomington -- Marking a historic evening at the IU Auditorium on March 23, world-renowned composer and pianist Michel Camilo will play his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, originally commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra with Indiana University faculty member Leonard Slatkin as music director, for the first time in Bloomington. The Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany Camilo with Slatkin conducting. Tickets are free and must be obtained at the IU Auditorium box office.

"American Ma(u)l" combines commentary on race relations with satire

The time is "next." The place is "near." Faced with a failing economy, the president of the United States decides to reinstitute slavery, and all black Americans are to report to cotton-picking duty at once. What follows in this raucous, slap-happy satire will have audiences rolling in their seats -- and thinking deeply about the country's past, present and future. Presented by the Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama, American Ma(u)l opens Friday, March 21, at IU Bloomington.

Fantastical tales of love lost and inspiration found will delight Indiana University Opera Theater audiences April 4, 5, 11 and 12 at the Musical Arts Center. Jacques Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann depicts a writer's romantic adventures as he searches for his true love and ultimately finds fulfillment in his artistic calling.

The IU Ballet Department's origins as a means of supplying operas with dancers inspired Michael Vernon, chair of the IU Jacobs School's Ballet Department, to offer ballet audiences "A Night at the Opera (at the Ballet)." On March 21 and 22, dancers will perform to ballet music from beloved operas by Gounod, Rossini, Handel and Meyerbeer.

On March 7, 30 Indiana University School of Journalism students left for a 10-day trip abroad to retrace the footsteps of famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle. The journey included visits to a variety of historical World War II sites and other points of interest. For students like Rosemary Pennington, the trip was an emotional experience that brought Pyle's descriptive dispatches to life in a way that no classroom setting could.
