"Each semester as I introduce myself and begin to discuss the curriculum for E155, Beginning Modern Dance, the inevitable question comes up: 'Professor Shea, what exactly is modern dance?' This always gives me pause, and even after 20 years of teaching in the university and professional world, I still search for exactly the right words. IU Contemporary Dance Program Coordinator Elizabeth Shea explains the art of modern dance and how IU students are continuing its rich tradition.

 Giving hope to South African children through photography

Jamila Martin re-evaluated the importance of life after her friend and fellow South Bend native Katie McCloskey died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. There was more to do for Martin, more to life. She quit her job in Grand Rapids and moved back and settled into living in South Bend. The next turn brought her to IU South Bend to study photography. Yet, school was not enough. She wanted to use her natural ability to work with children and her love of art. Her skills and love took her for three months to teach photography in South Africa.

 It’s like ‘American Idol’ with St. Peter as judge!

Four singing divas compete before St. Peter for a spot in the heavenly choir. The start of a joke? Not exactly. Rather, it's the situation that unfolds in Edwin Penhorwood's comic opera Too Many Sopranos -- one of seven operas and three ballets announced for IU Opera and Ballet Theater's 2006-07 season. Penhorwood, a faculty member in the IU Jacobs School of Music, believes the opera will appeal to those who are opera regulars and those who might be intimidated by the art form. Fans of FOX's hit television show American Idol might even "get a hoot" out of the competition, he said.

Landing a role in the No. 1 Broadway musical is a feat many actors dream of, but few actually get to live out -- especially less than a year after graduating college. Colin Donnell, a May 2005 graduate of Indiana University, is the exception, and he's showing off his role at his alma mater this week as his touring company of Mamma Mia! takes the stage at the IU Auditorium.

Book Club

A book club is an excellent way for people to learn more about what they've read. Through discussions, each person can learn more about the text by listening to other people's opinions. Jane Schultz, professor of English at IUPUI, is in a book group with several other IUPUI faculty members and people in the community. The group meets six times a year, and Schultz said the key to the group's success is that its group members are multidisciplinary.
