Senior Photography Show Opens at IUPUI
March 6, 6-9 p.m., Herron Photography Gallery in Herron School of Art and Design, 735 West New York St., Indianapolis -- The Herron School of Art and Design photography seniors are exhibiting their first works of the spring semester in "Hypertrophy." The 23 individual works on display range in content dealing with personal experiences, socio-political commentary, and humor to the exploration of cultural diversities and gender roles. There will be a mixture of still flat work, video pieces and installations.

In one of the signature events of Indiana University's 25th Annual ArtsWeek, the legendary author Maya Angelou will appear at IU Auditorium in Bloomington today, March 5, at 7 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Union Board. Angelou's visit was initially scheduled for March 1 but has been rescheduled. Tickets for admission already issued for the March 1 lecture will be honored at the time of the March 5 lecture, and ticket exchanges will not be required.

In its 2008-2009 season finale, Indiana University Ballet Theater presents "Variations on a Russian Theme," with a new, contemporary classical version of Swan Lake and a world premiere choreography by Matthew Neenan, March 27 and 28 at the Musical Arts Center.

With its first-ever World Language Festival, March 7, Indiana University Bloomington will welcome high school students from across the state to learn about subjects as diverse as traditional African drum and dance techniques, ancient Chinese calligraphy, Slavic languages, Germanic celebrations, common French gestures and current cultural issues in the Middle East.

Beginning March 6, the IU Art Museum will display two new exhibitions: "From Pen to Printing Press: Ten Centuries of Islamic Book Arts" and "Transcendent: The Photographs of Hiroshi Sugimoto." These exhibitions, along with a special installation currently on display, will run through May 10.

Mamma Mia!, the wildly popular musical based on the songs of '70s pop sensation ABBA, returns to IU Auditorium Friday, March 6 for a three-day run. Seen by more than 30 million people around the world, Mamma Mia! was originally created by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
